A wandering of a maker’s mind ︎︎︎︎︎︎︎︎︎

What if materials could speak ?

 Would they have a voice ?

                                How would they converse when placed with another material ?

                                                                      Do they sing, whisper, shout or groan ?

Does a surface feel ?

                                                    Is its’ skin as sensitive or more so than ours ?

Does it goosebump, shiver, its’ hairs stand on end ?

                                                     Does a shape have a taste ?

                                                    Does it engulf the flavour of its’ environment ?

                                                   Does it wrinkle its’ nose in disgust or close its’ eyes in pleasure ?

      Can materials hold memory ?

      Does its’ body recognise its’ owner ?

      Do they greet a friendly hand with warmth ?

A bottom heavy sculpture,
Formed of materials to hand;
Cardboard, Chicken-wire, Foam or Air-dry Clay
[use one of these materials, or use them all]

Build upwards, narrowing the structure at its peak.
No taller than your knee,
with space for an absent hand.
...Or maybe a thumb...Or a finger

To hold, maybe to grip.

I think this is a hardened surface of plaster,
or clay.
A definitive blob of colour,
And the same hue as chewed bubblegum.

Slather the surface;
Smooth, Pat, Squidge, And blend.

Let the materials sit.
Let the materials cure.

Bound together, a formation
of materials which is now a sculpture.
